Immigration 101: Support of our Immigrant Neighbors – Baraboo

You are invited!
Immigration 101: An Education and Fundraising Event in Support of our Immigrant Neighbors

When: Tuesday, September 22, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM (Doors open at 6:00 PM)
Where: First United Methodist Church, 615 Broadway, Baraboo, WI (enter
through the doors off the 4 th St. parking lot). Wheelchair accessible.

What: Atty. Grant Sovern, Administrator of the Community Immigration Law
Center (CILC) in Madison will speak about the current state of the U.S. immigration
system and the urgent need for additional funds and legal support to ensure legal
representation and consultations for people in Wisconsin facing deportation.

Attendees will learn about immigration issues, including the pathways and
requirements currently in place to attain legal residency status, which are more
limited and convoluted than most people think. Most immigration deportation
cases are civil cases, for which defendants are not entitled to government-
appointed counsel.

Many immigrants must navigate the complex legal system on
their own while locked up in detention and with inadequate command of English
and of immigrant rights. Immigrants represented by an immigration attorney are
more than 3 times as likely to be granted relief as those who are not represented,
and CILC has successfully assisted many in Wisconsin, including in Sauk County.

Cost: The public is invited for free, but will be encouraged to make a contribution
to CILC to help ensure competent legal assistance is available to our immigrant
neighbors in Sauk County. CILC is a not-for-profit organization. Many of their
attorneys volunteer their time, yet each case still costs about $5,000.
