2009/01/08: Prevent the Next Coal Sludge Disaster

Join with WNPJ member group 1Sky in their call for a ban on new coal plants, a call that has been made even more unrgent due to the recent spill of thousands of tons of coal ash near a Tennessee Valley Authority coal plant. The coal sludge contains high levels of  toxic metals, like lead and arsenic, and is nearly 50 times as large as the Exxon-Valdez oil spill.

2009/01/02: Nine steps the incoming president can take to build a peace-based economy.

The following is a memo to Barack Obama from Deepak Chopra.  Forwarded to WNPJ by Sr. Lillia Langreck, SSND

You have been elected by the first anti-war constituency since 1952, when Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected after promising to end the Korean War. But ending a war isn't the same as bringing peace. America has been on a war footing since the day after Pearl Harbor, 67 years ago. We spend more on our military than the next 16 countries combined. If you have a vision of change that goes to the heart of this country's deep problems, ending our dependence on war is far more important than ending our dependency on foreign oil.

2008/12/29: Talking Points: The Gaza Crisis

by Phyllis Bennis, Institute For Policy Studies

The death toll in Gaza continues to rise. The carnage is everywhere -- city streets, a mosque, hospitals, police stations, a jail, a university bus stop, a plastics factory, a television station. It seems impossible, unacceptable, to step back to analyze the situation while bodies remain buried under the rubble, while parents continue to search for their missing children, while doctors continue to labor to stitch burned and broken bodies back together without sufficient medicine or equipment. The hospitals are running short even of electricity -- the Israeli blockade has denied them fuel to run the generators. It is an ironic twist on the legacy of Israel's involvement in an earlier massacre -- in the Sabra and Shatila camps, in Lebanon back in 1982, it was the Israeli soldiers who lit the flairs, lighting the night sky so their Lebanese allies could continue to kill.

2008/12/22: Colombia Action Alert

The Peace Community of San Jose de Apartado has informed Colombia Support Netowrk of specific threats made in the last few days to eliminate the community.  Referring to the community as SOB’s and guerrilla supporters, paramilitaries spoke of a plan, apparently being developed with the military, to attack the Peace Community during this holiday season.

2008/12/19: "Salad-Shooter" company makes ammunition, too

Eau-Claire-based National Presto Industries, best known for kitchen products like its "Salad Shooter", derives more than half of its profits from a contract to produce 40mm cannon rounds for the AC-130 gunship (left). In August 2008, an AC-130 was used to attack the Afghan village of Azizabad, and by the time it was done, nearly 90 villagers, most of them women and children, were dead. The youngest victim was only a few months old. The Army later admitted that the attack had been a mistake.
