You are welcome to submit questions in advance, or bring them along to the webinar on Monday, February 3. Staying informed is going to be so important in the coming weeks, months, and years. While this week was a difficult one at the federal level, Fair Wisconsin was proud to join Governor Tony Evers as he delivered his seventh State of the State Address, during which he reaffirmed his commitment to protecting LGBTQ+ Wisconsinites: “And to our LGBTQ kids and Wisconsinites - you know the promise I made to you - a promise I have always been proud to keep. I will veto any bill that makes Wisconsin a less safe, less inclusive, less welcoming place, and I’ll never stop delivering on my promise to use every power available to me to defend you, protect your rights, and keep you safe.” In the face of federal hostility, and as we do the work to build a safer, more inclusive, welcoming Wisconsin, we are proud to have such a champion for our community in Governor Evers. info@fairwisconsin.com https://www.wnpj.org/member-organizations-list/fair-wisconsin WISDOM VIRTUAL TRAINING – Stopping Mass Deportations Through Local Sheriffs Date: Monday, February 10 Time: Starts at 6:30 PM Register: https://bit.ly/stoppingdeportations This training will equip you with the tools to advocate for change and hold local authorities accountable. Rethinking the Roots of Peace, Democracy, and War – virtual Zoom event with Van Jackson, Victoria University of Wellington, NZ. The concept of the “national interest” has become an under-appreciated source of global insecurity. Governments routinely use the language of the national interest to justify a politics of violence, secrecy, and exclusion while bracketing off explicit questions of morality and justice. And national frameworks for mobilizing resources and collective action are logically mismatched against global threats like climate change. This lecture will argue that addressing the contradictions in the national interest—as well as some of international security studies’ most cherished strategic constructs—is a start point for constructing more durable forms of security. UW-Madison, Union South – Marquee Theater (1308 W. Dayton St.) In April 1969, a small group of Black and Puerto Rican students shut down the City College of New York, an elite public university located right in the heart of Harlem. Fueled by the revolutionary fervor sweeping the nation, the strike soon turned into an uprising, leading to the extended occupation of the campus, classes being canceled, students being arrested, and the resignation of the college president. Through archival footage and modern-day interviews, we follow the students’ struggle against the institutional racism that, for over a century, had shut out people of color from this and other public universities. WNPJ + Ceasefire Statement by MRSCP + WISDOM’s Rights of Nature Series + Immigration Law 101+ Baraboo Acts reading series + WBW Close Down the Bases Campaign + other statewide events The WI Network for Peace and Justice is the umbrella non-profit organization supporting the work of 86 member groups around Wisconsin. About 90 percent of Gaza’s population was forcibly displaced, making it among the highest recorded percentages in modern conflicts. [Hassan Jedi/Anadolu]. More photos here . Madison-Rafah Sister City Project welcomes the temporary ceasefire in Gaza Any pause in this genocide is good news, but we urge everyone not to look away because: While the current ceasefire brings relief to the people of Gaza who have lived through more than a year of genocide, they are wary. The ceasefire needs to be permanent and there is every indication that Israel and the US do not intend for that to happen. As it has in Lebanon, Israel has already broken the ceasefire. The US continues to send billions to arm Israel and give it the green light to do whatever it wants. Israel immediately escalated its military campaign in the West Bank , particularly the city and camp of Jenin . Israeli leaders have openly vowed to repeat what they did in Gaza. And the IDF is supporting the latest violent "price tag" pogrom by Israeli settlers trying to drive Palestinians off their land. The aid that is finally starting to get into Gaza is welcome , but woefully inadequate to counter the apocalyptic level of human suffering and destruction that Israel has inflicted in order to make Gaza uninhabitable. To make matters worse, on January 28, Israel is set to outlaw UNRWA , the agency upon which millions of Palestinian refugees depend, while the US government continues to cut off all UNRWA funding . Our partners at the Middle East Children's Alliance (MECA) have just put out an update on the ceasefire from the perspective of their staff (who have continued their work on the ground in Gaza throughout this horrible time) that we urge everyone to read. We also ask that those who can please donate to Gaza relief -- either at the link at the end of MECA's update, or via MRSCP's MECA donation page . Finally, and very importantly, never rely on the mainstream news for accurate information. Visit our website to find a list of recommended news sources. rafahsistercity@yahoo.com WISDOM's Rights of Nature Series January 29 to February 26 (every Wednesday) 6:30-8:00 pm, via Zoom Rights of Nature is an approach to environmental justice that WISDOM has embraced. The Rights of Nature team will be hosting a 5-Week Zoom training about the Rights of Nature movement. The training will include the following 5 sessions: Key principles of Rights of Nature Global Perspectives/What's happening around the world Philosophical, Ethical and Religious Dimensions of Rights of Nature Practical Applications and Advocacy Personal, Group and Collective Action Plan Register HERE - Questions? office@wisdomwisconsin.org History and Current Status of Immigration Law in the U.S. – Part of the UW Badger Talks Series Thurs. Room 325/26, Pyle Center on Langdon St. Panel Discussion featuring: Professors Gay Seidman (UW-Madison), Steve Sanders (Indiana University), Howard Schweber (UW-Madison), Keith Woodward (UW-Madison) and Sabiya Ahamed (Palestine Legal). Last year, campus protests became a political flashpoint in the US. As students around the country staged protests against the Israel/Gaza conflict, Congress held hearings, police were deployed to shut down encampments, and university leaders were forced to step down. Reports of antisemitic incidents on campuses proliferated. Over the summer, universities prepared for the incoming year by holding disciplinary proceedings for students who had been involved in campus protests, increasing security personnel, and, as in the case of UW, enacting greater restrictions on campus speech. The panel forms part of a series exploring dissent on campus, the Israel/Gaza conflict, and antisemitism and islamophobia in US universities. 1/29 @ 7:30pm-9:00pm:  Screening of the film TANTURA. Check out this article from 1/10/25 on immigrant workers in WI and watch for more in this series! ‘How in the hell will we continue to be the Dairy State?’ Nowhere would mass deportation have a bigger impact than on Wisconsin’s dairy farms, where an estimated 70% of the workforce is made up of immigrants, mostly from Mexico and Central America. Because Congress has never created a year-round visa for low-skilled farm workers, almost all of Wisconsin’s immigrant dairy workers are undocumented. Without them, experts say, the whole industry would collapse. At a Jan. 3 press conference in the Capitol, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers called the threat of mass deportation “illogical,” and said “we will do everything in our power to prevent it.” “The bottom line is, in Wisconsin, 70% of our farms … 70% of the people may be part of the federal government’s idea to move them elsewhere, out of our country,” Evers said. “Think about that. How in the hell will we continue to be the Dairy State with no one to milk the cows and do the other important work?” Madison-Rafah Sister City Project Announces a WIN! We wanted to let you know that in response to hundreds of letters and comments, Madison’s Willy Street Co-op has removed all Sabra products from the shelves at all three co-op locations! Thanks to everyone who took action for making this victory possible!! About 450 people contacted the co-op and we are deeply grateful to them for using the collective power of words and purchasing power to stand with the people of Palestine. Official member comments on Sabra were more than 5 to 1 in favor or removal. If you are a co-op member or shopper, next time you are in a store please thank Willy Street management and workers for listening and responding to this call to take genocide off the shelves, and let them know you plan to reward their response by continuing to shop at Willy Street. We are currently figuring out our next steps to advance the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in Madison. In the meantime, you can explore other ways to use the power of your purchases to support Palestine. In particular, we suggest the following: Use the BoyCat app to scan an item and find out if it shows up on the official boycott list. Use the NoThanks app to do the same via the App Store or Google Play Review the Boycott movement site Join the newsletter for boycott updates through the JVP BDS movement: https://bdsmovement.net/tags/jvp In solidarity, All of us at Madison-Rafah Sister rafahsistercity@yahoo.com Sign WAVE's petition today! 80% of Wisconsinites are in favor of strengthening our state’s gun violence prevention laws. New, more competitive election maps mean that right now we have more opportunity to achieve these gains than we have in over a decade. But this will only happen if we speak up! Rights of Nature is a global movement that explores the concept that natural ecosystems, species, and elements, such as rivers, forests, and mountains, have inherent rights to exist, thrive, and evolve. This idea challenges traditional legal systems that treat nature as property to be exploited, advocating instead for laws that recognize nature’s intrinsic value. Our speaker, Anahkwet (Guy Reiter), will cover key principles, such as the right of nature to be protected from harm, the right of ecosystems to regenerate, and the right of communities to defend nature from environmental degradation. He will also present case studies of the successful integration of Rights of Nature into legal frameworks, such as in Ecuador and New Zealand, and will examine the growing movement to enshrine these rights in national, state, tribal, and international law. Anahkwet (Guy Reiter) is a traditional Menominee who resides on the Menominee Reservation. He’s the Executive Director of a Menominee Indian community organization called Menikahnaehkem. He is also a community organizer, activist, author, amateur archaeologist, and lecturer. Anahkwet has organized a lot of events that have uplifted the human condition and demonstrated how enriching the Menominee culture is. He has lectured at universities on the connection Menominee Indians have to the Menominee River. He has also written articles for Environmental Health News and other publications. When Anahkwet isn’t working, you’ll find him enjoying time with his partner and their children. Anahkwet is an advocate for Indigenous people everywhere. contact@350wisconsin.org 1/9:  WISDOM Know Your Rights - Train the Trainers by Gamalie Time - TBD, via Zoom. Contact: office@wisdomwisconsin.org Sign WAVE’s petition – to WI legislators to end gun violence Our hearts are heavy this week as we grieve alongside the students, staff, families, and the entire community impacted by the tragedy at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. The pain and trauma they are enduring is unimaginable, and it will leave scars that last a lifetime. Now is the time for action—and it starts with all of us. In less than three weeks, the new legislative session will begin. Demand that our legislators prioritize gun violence prevention. Wisconsin’s politicians must pass evidence-based laws that we know save lives. We cannot let them off the hook. Signing this petition today, though, is just a start. We must maintain the urgency we feel at this moment. That’s why we need you to commit to taking every action we send your way in the coming months. Consistent, collective action from across Wisconsin is what will secure this change. In moments like this, the people of Wisconsin show up — with compassion, with resolve, and with the will to make a difference. Together, we can honor those who have been taken and build a future where tragedies like this are prevented. Today I am feeling anger, disbelief, and sorrow. But when we transform these feelings into action – when we stand united and refuse to accept inaction as the norm – we have the power to create the change we so desperately need. Introducing a new member group of WNPJ – Fair Wisconsin Mission: Advancing, achieving and protecting equality & liberation for LGBTQ+ Wisconsinites Our work: Ending Discrimination In 1982, Wisconsin made history by being the first state to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. This historic legislation has been protecting lesbian, gay and bisexual Wisconsinites from discrimination at their workplace, in housing, and in public accommodations for forty years. Our state law currently does not provide protections against discrimination based on gender identity or expression. At Fair Wisconsin we believe that it is equally important these protections be extended to protect all people based on their gender identity and expression as well. State of Wisconsin employees and contractors are protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression by Governor Evers  Executive Order #1 . Currently the cities of Appleton, Cudahy, De Pere, Green Bay, Janesville, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh (partial protections), Sun Prairie, Racine, and Verona provide these protections at the local level, with comprehensive gender-inclusive housing, employment and public accommodations protections against discrimination. In addition, Dane County and Milwaukee County have fair housing protections and personnel policies that prohibit LGBTQ+ discrimination and in 2023 passed trans sanctuary resolutions. We continue to work to advance local nondiscrimination ordinances, statewide and in targeted communities as a way to increase protections while also educating the public about this issue and to underscore the need for comprehensive state and federal laws. Contact information: Abigail Swetz, 122 East Olin Avenue, Suite 100 | Madison, Wisconsin 53713 | 608.441.0143 |  info@fairwisconsin.com   https://fairwisconsin.com/ Upcoming event with Fair Wisconsin: Tues Dec 17 @ 7 – 8 pm Webinar with Fair Wisconsin: Community Processing with Fair Wisconsin – “I’m just not sure what I feel…” The presidential election is over, but the work of advancing, achieving, and protecting equality and liberation for LGBTQ+ Wisconsinites and Americans continues. While we continue to fight back and build a stronger movement for LGBTQ+ rights, our work must also involve rest, recuperation, time for community, and even creativity. Because we can only do the work if we care for ourselves and our community. With this in mind, we invite you to join us at one or more virtual creative processing workshops, offering attendees the opportunity to process your thoughts and emotions as we pause and recuperate in community. Each workshop will follow the same format: centering introduction, a grounding art experience, some writing time, and time for communal sharing, and will leave us better positioned to build our collective power. Instead of respecting the Band’s sovereignty to culture, Enbridge has initiated the permitting process to construct a new section of pipeline around the Reservation, putting an even greater portion of the watershed at risk for an oil spill. While thousands of people have spoken up in opposition to this project, the Wisconsin DNR just approved the permits for the project, one of the final pieces needed by Enbridge to proceed. Our definition of justice impacted applies to both directly and indirectly impacted individuals, as well as our allies within the community. In one way or another, our state's current system of (in)justice touches us all, and so we welcome any woman who is interested in joining us as we support one another on our individual and collective journeys of healing and growth. FREE has strived for years to meet women wherever they are at, and we have realized that means we need to find ways to overcome barriers of childcare, transportation, and demanding schedules. That is why we have opted to begin these virtual Circles, so we can reach more women across the state and build a sense of community, even when we are miles apart. We intend to keep these Circles going throughout the winter months, at the very least. Hope to see you at our first virtual Circle next week! Israel's genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and its expansion of killing and destruction in Lebanon have targeted the ecologies and environments that sustain the livelihood of Palestinians and Lebanese. In Gaza, Palestinians face the destruction of water infrastructure and agricultural land, even as they face catastrophic levels of hunger under siege. In South Lebanon, olive trees and the harvest season have been burned and threatened. In both Lebanon and Gaza, the use of white phosphorus, the inordinate amount of asbestos-poisoned rubble produced in the destruction of the built environment, the movement of animals because of different patterns of human inhabitation will all have long-term effects on the inhabitability of the land, affecting all the region, including Israel. Yet, Palestinians and Lebanese have insisted to continue to find ways to inhabit the ruins produced, to grow food, and tend to all of those living. This panel will examine these environmental tactics of war and their long-term effects, along with ground-up tactics of survival and sumud, for it is the latter that holds the key to rebuilding and cultivating futures on the day after. The presidential election is over, but the work of advancing, achieving, and protecting equality and liberation for LGBTQ+ Wisconsinites and Americans continues. While we continue to fight back and build a stronger movement for LGBTQ+ rights, our work must also involve rest, recuperation, time for community, and even creativity. Because we can only do the work if we care for ourselves and our community. With this in mind, we invite you to join Fair Wisconsin at one or more virtual creative processing workshops, offering attendees the opportunity to process your thoughts and emotions as we pause and recuperate in community. Each workshop will follow the same format: centering introduction, a grounding art experience, some writing time, and time for communal sharing, and will leave us better positioned to build our collective power. The WISDOM Solitary and Conditions of Confinement workgroup, together with the Ladies of SCI, invite you to an important event. Unlike Wisconsin, some other states have an independent organization (or "ombudsman") that is responsible for monitoring what happens in the state's prisons. These oversight groups have unfettered access to go into any facility at any time, and to speak to any staff member or incarcerated person confidentially. This is very different from Wisconsin where the primary responsibility for investigating issues with the Department of Corrections lies with the Department of Corrections. Please join us to learn more about how Independent Oversight works in other places, and how to help the effort to get Wisconsin to join the ranks of those states that have some kind of external accountability for their prisons. Please click here to register for the webinar . When you do, you will get an email with a link to join us on Tuesday. office@wisdomwisconsin.org 12/12 @ 9am:  WDRT.org radio will air a conversation with Dr Sarah D'Onofrio and WNPJ Board member Dena Eakles. These include food waste from various types of industrial food manufacturing such as pet food, slaughterhouses, breweries, and other waste. Most importantly we will discuss how digestate and biogas production negatively impacts water, soil, and air in surrounding communities and beyond. You can find the podcast at WDRT.org at "Conversations" or on WNPJ's Environmental Justice page following the show. dena.eakles@gmail.com 12/13 @ 11am:  WEBINAR: On Rendering Uninhabitable: The War on Palestine and Lebanon and its Environmental Effects. Contact: Voces de la Frontera Madison Organizer stephaniejsa123@gmail.com WNPJ member groups are following a bill in the house and senate affecting nonprofits From Wisdom Wisconsin : The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to take another vote on H.R. 9495 – Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act – this week. Without our immediate, collective action, this legislation could pass and have far-reaching effects for organizations like WISDOM, Gamaliel, its affiliates, and partner organizations and result in the loss of their not-for-profit status simply by exercising their rights to free speech. According to supporters of H.R. 9495, this piece of legislation is simply meant to focus on nonprofits that support terrorist activities and was birthed in response to the conflicts on college campuses over the war in Gaza; however, a growing number of organizations, including civil rights, religious, reproductive health, immigrant rights, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQIA+, environmental, and educational organizations, describe this bill as legislation that would grant the executive branch broad and easily abused powers to swiftly revoke the tax-exempt status of a nonprofit by asserting that it is a “terrorist supporting organization.” Per the legislation, the Treasury Department could make the designation without any real due process and without having to produce evidence justifying the decision. In Solidarity, David Liners office@wisdomwisconsin.org And, an UPDATE 11/22: The good news is that Rep.Gwen Moore was responsive and changed her vote, opposing HR9495, a terrible bill which threatens non-profits with losing their tax exempt status for undefined "support of terrorism." It would allow the Treasury Secretary to act with no due process. In a Trump administration, support for a Gaza ceasefire could be enough grounds. The bad news is that the bill still passed and now goes to the Senate. Two things you can do: (1) Thank Gwen for listening and changing her vote. https://gwenmoore.house.gov/contact/ (2) Urge Tammy Baldwin to oppose it in the Senate. https://www.baldwin.senate.gov/contact/contact-tammy --- Veterans For Peace Milwaukee Chapter 102 vfpchapter102@gmail.com Learn more about this issue on this 4-minute story on NPR from 11/26! https://www.npr.org/2024/11/26/nx-s1-5205294/measure-would-strip-tax-exempt-status-from-nonprofits-deemed-supporters-of-terrorism WNPJ Member Group Events Click here  to see a listing of recurring Vigils across the state! All welcome. Questions? Contact Mary Kay Baum marykbaum@gmail.com Update on Line 5 from 350 Wisconsin On November 14, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) granted Canadian oil giant Enbridge Energy permits for its controversial plan to construct a new segment of its Line 5 oil pipeline in northern Wisconsin. The 70-year-old pipeline currently cuts across the heart of the Bad River Reservation, where it has been trespassing on Tribal land for more than a decade. In 2019, the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa filed a lawsuit in federal court to force its removal. Rather than shut down the aging pipeline, Enbridge applied for permits to build a new 40-mile section of pipeline around the perimeter of the Reservation that would allow its continued operation within the Bad River watershed. Midwest Environmental Advocates is currently providing legal representation to several organizations working to stop new construction on Line 5: League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, 350 Wisconsin and Sierra Club – Wisconsin Chapter. See their press release here . Emily Park, co-Executive Director of 350 Wisconsin, said, “At a time when climate change is undeniably one of the most urgent threats facing our planet, it is deeply troubling that the DNR would issue permits for the construction of new fossil fuel infrastructure. Prolonging the use of fossil fuels will increase the frequency and intensity of floods, droughts, heat waves, wildfires, new diseases, and extreme weather events. Instead of building infrastructure that facilitates more carbon emissions, we should be investing in renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and technologies that will help transition to a clean energy future.” Questions? contact@350wisconsin.org WNPJ Member Group Events Click here  to see a listing of recurring Vigils across the state! Some of our WNPJ members may still have these Immigrant Welcome yard signs we were selling back in 2008. If you do, send us a photo of the sign in your yard – and we’ll post it on our WNPJ Facebook page! Stand up for immigrant rights. These signs featured handwritten messages of "welcome" in six languages by people from many of Wisconsin’s immigrant communities. The two-sided yard sign featured "welcome" in Spanish and Hmong, and we had single-sided window signs featured in either Spanish or Hmong.
