TWO Action Alerts from Baraboo Acts! Remember:
Power of the people is greater than the people in power.
~ Wael Ghonim
Some of our partners and supporters are being defunded or facing threats of defunding. The Baraboo Acts Coalition encourages you to be informed, speak out, and show up, for these supporters and partners. Thank you! barabooacts@gmail.com
Cuts to NEH funding
A majority of our funding for the successful book discussion of The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, by Heather McGee, came from Wisconsin Humanities, a non-profit group that has worked in every corner of the state since 1972 to explore what it means to be human, to be part of a democracy and to strengthen all of our communities. The elimination of National Endowment for the Humanities funding on April 2 will result in Wisconsin Humanities closing its doors very soon. The end of NEH funding to Wisconsin Humanities and other state humanities councils will harm communities in every state, in every Congressional district, and contribute to the erasure of our shared humanity and hopes for democracy. What can you do to protect Wisconsin Humanities and our work in your community? Click here to take action NOW.
Cuts to Public Libraries and Schools
The Baraboo Acts Coalition works closely with staff at the Carnegie-Schadde Memorial Public Library and the School District of Baraboo for many of their events and activities.
Recent executive orders and proposed cuts threaten vital federal funding and programs that support Wisconsin’s public schools and libraries. These resources support students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students and families, youth mental health programs, English language learners, smaller class sizes, and help fund important initiatives like access to school meals, career and technical education, academic opportunities, and more. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has interactive maps showing how devastating these cuts would be to Wisconsin, Sauk County, and Baraboo. Not surprisingly, rural counties and districts would be the hardest hit. Full details are here: https://dpi.wi.gov/policy-budget/federal-funding. If you are inspired to let your representatives know how important our schools and libraries are to you, check out 5 Calls. It is free to use, and can be downloaded as an app on your smart phone or used along with your computer. Just type in your address on the 5Calls website, and summaries of current issues plus the phone numbers of your legislators are easily located. https://5calls.org/getting-started/

A campaign has been launched to try to overturn Wisconsin's unconstitutional law limiting your right to engage in Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) in support of Palestinian rights
On Wednesday, April 23, members and supporters of the Wisconsin Right to Boycott Campaign will meet at the State Capitol to lobby our representatives to support new legislation to restore our right to boycott. There will be a press conference in the Capitol at 9:30 am, followed by prearranged meetings with representatives through 2-3 pm. The day will close with a rally to protect our voices, our democracy, and our country. WE NEED YOU TO JOIN US! Thanks for your support, Barb O. of MRSCP http://www.madisonrafah.org

4/23 @ 5:00pm-7:00pm: Remaining Resilient to Repression: Learning from the Atlanta 61 Trial! Social Justice Center (1202 Williamson St.) In the face of unceasing, authoritarian state repression against activists, immigrants, and community members in the current political moment, how can we transmute our struggles into strength, and effectively keep one another safe? In 2023, 61 protesters fighting deforestation and police militarization in Atlanta were indicted in a domestic terrorist RICO conspiracy case for their activism by the Trumpist Georgia Attorney General, Chris Carr. The trial of the Atlanta 61 has the potential to set legal precedents that will ricochet throughout our movements and affect our work for years to come. We know that the scale of repression leveled by the state is an indicator of the success of our movements, and that from the forest to the courts, the frontlines are everywhere. Repression intends to demobilize us; anti-repression is what enables us to continue! Join us to discuss the history and background of the ongoing Atlanta 61 case, state repression against movements, how to build up anti-repression infrastructure locally, and how this outlandish case applies to repression our communities face today. Hosted by the Madison Infoshop – part of the nationwide Stop Cop City Imaginary Crimes Tour. peckjohne@gmail.com

Almost all Muslims in America have encountered Islamophobia, whether through everyday microaggressions or more overt acts of hate. At WMCA, one of our top priorities for 2025 and beyond is to confront and combat Islamophobia here in Wisconsin.
We’re urging state lawmakers to pass a resolution that condemns Islamophobia, hate speech, and all forms of violence and discrimination. This is a crucial step toward building a safer, more inclusive Wisconsin and a better society at large.
This resolution will:
📷 Acknowledge the contributions of Muslim Wisconsinites
📷 Denounce Islamophobia and religious-based hate
📷 Call for a statewide commitment to justice, equity & pluralism
You can show your support for this resolution by signing the petition and letting our leaders know how important this resolution is to their Muslim constituents.
