From Veterans for Peace: David Giffey passed away on Friday, July 19.  There will be a funeral on Monday, July 22 at the Greek Orthodox Church at 11 N 7th St, Madison.  The visitation is set for 10 am, the service is at 11am.  A luncheon will follow the service. Please pass the news on to friends and peace and justice activists who you think would like to know. He will be greatly missed.  We value the time we had with him.

Brad Geyer, 920-650-0052 ~ Veterans for Peace Madison ~Clarence Kailin, Chapter 25

From our WNPJ archives,  here is an interview with David Giffey by Judy Miner in 2011....

David was a long-time member of the Madison Chapter of Veterans for Peace #25, as well as an author and artist. His work with counter-recruitment in the high schools around Arena, WI is legendary - and many students have benefited from the high school scholarships awarded in a yearly competition of essays about why war is not the answer, coordinated by Giffey.

David edited the  book "Long Shadows: Veterans’ Paths to Peace", published by Atwood Publishing, Madison. It is a collection of interviews with 20 veterans of U.S. military conflicts during the past 70 years who became peace activists. The late historian Howard Zinn wrote the foreword to Long Shadows. To learn more - see madisonvfp.org/   or https://www.amazon.com/Long-Shadows-Veterans-Paths-Peace/dp/1891859641

Did your absentee ballot arrive in the mail this week? You may want to know what Wisconsin Faith Voices for Peace has to say on these referendum questions!

These upcoming referendums threaten checks and balances in the Wisconsin State Constitution! They give sole power to the legislature for spending federal funds, block timely funding for emergency response, and create more gridlock in the legislature.

WNPJ member groups Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, WAVE Educational Fund, and Wisconsin Faith Voices for Justice strongly encourage Wisconsinites to Vote NO on all the constitutional amendments that will appear on the ballot in August and November later this year.

❌ Question 1: “Delegation of appropriation power. Shall section 35 (1) of article IV of the constitution be created to provide that the legislature may not delegate its sole power to determine how moneys shall be appropriated?”

❌ Question 2: “Allocation of federal moneysShall section 35 (2) of article IV of the constitution be created to prohibit the governor from allocating any federal moneys the governor accepts on behalf of the state without the approval of the legislature by joint resolution or as provided by legislative rule?
