2008/09/23: Contact your senators asking support for a floor vote (this week) on S3061 The William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauth

LEGISLATIVE ALERT :   URGENT

            Please contact your senators asking support for a floor vote (this week)  on

                        S3061  The William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act

            This bill, written by Biden and Brownbeck is currently in force.  If it is not reauthorized before the end of the current
            session (Friday, unless the session is extended) the bill will die.  The effect would be to deny protection for trafficked
            women and their families back home (because traffickers often threaten to harm families in order to coerce labor);
            it would send the wrong message to those who would deny basic human rights.  The bill is imperfect, but remaining
            in force provides opportunity to improve conditions while not denying protections already existant.

        Make no mistake about it:  this is an anti-slavery bill  (See E. Benjamin Skinner, A Crime so Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern Day          Slavery  for more information about slavery everywhere in the world today  -- and not just in the sex trade).

For your information, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares in Article 4:  "No one shall be held in slavery or servidude;

       slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms."
