Spotlight on a WNPJ Member Group - Casa Maria Catholic Worker House - Milwaukee

There are Catholic worker-communities throughout the country, based on the philosophy and beliefs of their founders,  Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin  - which all began in New York City in 1933. The Milwaukee chapter, called the Casa Maria Catholic Worker House, began its work in 1966. The ministry of the Casa Maria Catholic Worker Community focuses on opening homes to women and children in need of short-term housing, refugees and asylum seekers, and families with longer-term needs.

In addition, the organization provides food, clothing and used furniture to their guests–while simultaneously participating in social justice campaigns that are geared towards the well-being of society. Casa Maria Catholic Worker Community strives to create a society where it is easier for people to be good; and they trust in the divine to give them the needs to make their goals.

To support the mission of Casa Maria Catholic Worker Community, the organization also relies on valuable volunteers to help in the community. One way is through Household Help, which entails donating household items to Casa Maria. These donations help those who do not have access to basic necessities. With Casa Maria, there are also several volunteer opportunities at the house. These opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • preparing dinner,
  • doing yard work,
  • moving furniture,
  • donations,
  • and light maintenance.

From time to time, Casa Maria also hosts events that showcase passion projects for the organization. One upcoming event for Casa Maria will be on Thursday, September 23 - Anti-Gun Vigil - at Brew City Shooters Supply at 43rd Lincoln in Milwaukee, WI. This event will go from 12pm to 1pm, and the vigil will commemorate those who died by gun violence. Casa Maria takes the firm stance that guns are made for people to kill or maim their brothers and sisters.
