Demand your representative support these important amendments to cut Pentagon bloat!

Did you hear that the House Armed Services Committee voted to increase Pentagon spending by $25 billion more than President Biden requested, which could bring total military spending to a whopping $778 billion in FY2022?

That’s right. This is the same Pentagon budget that’s already bigger than the next 12 largest country’s military budgets combined.

It’s the same Pentagon that is wasting hundreds of billions of dollars on unnecessary weapons like the F-35, the most expensive weapon system ever built, yet still plagued with ongoing performance problems years later.

The very same Pentagon that can’t even pass an audit!

Yes, even after officially ending a war in Afghanistan that was costing us billions, they still want to throw more money toward war.

The additional $25 billion was added on to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which funds all defense spending, and that bill is heading to the full House for a vote - likely next week!

We’re expecting two important amendments to be offered to the NDAA. 1) An amendment to cut the $25 billion addition, and 2) an amendment to cut the top-line Pentagon budget by 10%. Each of these amendments is led by representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Mark Pocan (D-WI) respectively.

What exactly is in the additional $25 billion? It includes $9.8 billion for new weapons procurement, including a third DDG-51 destroyer warship for the Navy. It also would call for funding to buy three Virginia-class submarines a year. It adds $5.2 billion to research accounts and $4.2 billion for cyber defense and innovation.

Members of Congress across both aisles have pockets awash with cash from defense lobbyists, and this is a blatant ploy to get what they want in return. We’re never going to match the dollars from the defense lobbyists, so if we’re going to win, we need the people that actually put these politicians into office to turn up the pressure!

Any member of Congress that claims to care about national security should oppose this Pentagon increase and demand instead that the funds be allocated to address our real security threats: catastrophic climate change, the global COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing racial injustices. Take a quick moment and demand your representative support these important priorities today!
