SUMMARY:Immigration 101: Support of our Immigrant Neighbors – Baraboo
DESCRIPTION:\nYou are invited!Immigration 101: An Education and Fundraising Event in Support of our Immigrant Neighbors\n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday, September 22, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM (Doors open at 6:00 PM)Where: First United Methodist Church, 615 Broadway, Baraboo, WI (enterthrough the doors off the 4 th St. parking lot). Wheelchair accessible.\n\n\n\nWhat: Atty. Grant Sovern, Administrator of the Community Immigration LawCenter (CILC) in Madison will speak about the current state of the U.S. immigrationsystem and the urgent need for additional funds and legal support to ensure legalrepresentation and consultations for people in Wisconsin facing deportation.\n\n\n\nAttendees will learn about immigration issues, including the pathways andrequirements currently in place to attain legal residency status, which are morelimited and convoluted than most people think. Most immigration deportationcases are civil cases, for which defendants are not entitled to government-appointed counsel. \n\n\n\nMany immigrants must navigate the complex legal system ontheir own while locked up in detention and with inadequate command of Englishand of immigrant rights. Immigrants represented by an immigration attorney aremore than 3 times as likely to be granted relief as those who are not represented, and CILC has successfully assisted many in Wisconsin, including in Sauk County.\n\n\n\nCost: The public is invited for free, but will be encouraged to make a contributionto CILC to help ensure competent legal assistance is available to our immigrantneighbors in Sauk County. CILC is a not-for-profit organization. Many of theirattorneys volunteer their time, yet each case still costs about $5,000. \n\n\n\nVisit https://www.cilcmadison.org ( https://www.cilcmadison.org ) for more information about CILC.\n\n\n\nSponsors: Baraboo Acts Coalition, Indivisible Baraboo, Indivisible Sauk Prairie,Reedsburg Area Concerned Citizens and Rural Ally Group.\n\n\n\nRegistration: Go to the Mobilize post at https://tinyurl.com/CILC101 ( https://tinyurl.com/CILC101 ) for moreinformation and to pre-register.
