2008/11/18: Gun lobby big loser in recent election

 Once again, the gun lobby's threats and money have proven ineffective in the face of the strong public sentiment in support of limits on gun sales. Wave board member Bill Christofferson points out, "For years, many Wisconsin lawmakers have been afraid to vote for any sort of gun legislation, for fear the NRA will run them out of office at the next election. That's despite a lot of evidence to the contrary.  The biggest NRA targets almost always win."

No Wonder There's So Much Gun Violence.

A comprehensive, statewide bipartisan poll found overwhelming public support for a law that would require background on all gun sales.

FACT:
Eight out of ten likely Wisconsin voters support requiring a background check on all gun sales;

FACT:
85% of Wisconsin residents, including 80% of gun owners, think gun violence is a serious problem;

FACT:
Seven out of ten NRA supporters or members support background checks on all gun sales.

Commonsense, democracy and Wisconsin citizens who want to live in safe communities won ...

The big loser this election was the pro gun lobby. Voters ignored the gun lobby's endorsements and rejected the gun lobby's radical pro gun agenda. We saw this playing out in races all across the state, The gun lobby talks a big game, but we're simply too smart, too savvy and too pragmatic to be fooled or intimidated.

While voters value Wisconsin's gun culture, they refuse to be misled by extremist rhetoric. Yet, because Wisconsin is a "gun friendly" state, the gun lobby continues to set us in their sights at election time. Using money and endorsements in an attempt to influence the election, the gun lobby tries to secure a legislative body that will march in lockstep with them.

Wave board member, Bill Christofferson, points out, "For years, many Wisconsin lawmakers have been afraid to vote for any sort of gun legislation, for fear the NRA will run them out of office at the next election. That's despite a lot of evidence to the contrary.  The biggest NRA targets almost always win."

Jeri Bonavia, Executive Director of WAVE, recently told the Shepherd Express, legislators "should look at reality" and realize the NRA has been ineffective at influencing elections.

Nationally, the NRA claimed they would spend $40 million dollars on this election. Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence explains, "Guns are no longer a wedge issue for most voters.  Rather than being frightened with false alarms about the government taking their guns away, most voters want to do something to make it harder for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons and stop the trafficking in illegal guns."
