Objective: Wisconsin Voices seeks an experienced individual to coordinate the organization’s voting rights work, and align the fundamental value of protecting and expanding democracy with other social justice issues. The position is located in Milwaukee, WI; some travel is required.

Wisconsin Voices weaves together connections between and among organizations to enhance collective impact and improved effectiveness.  Issue Coordinator Position Description

 

In consultation with the Executive Director, the Issue Coordinator will plan, lead, manage and administer most aspects of Wisconsin Voices (WV) organizational enfranchisement and issue work.

 

The Issue Coordinator has overall responsibility for Wisconsin Voices network capacity development and programming relating to protecting and expanding voting rights, the coordination and implementation of strategic policy campaigns, and the coordination of voting rights coalitions, as well as additional issue coalitions as needed (including, but not limited to economic justice, health care, the environment and education) that successfully builds the Wisconsin Voices network. 

 

The Issue Coordinator is expected to demonstrate leadership to the entire State Voices network by exhibiting a high level of comprehension on issues of enfranchisement, including but not limited to: Election Administration, Voter Modernization, Re-Enfranchisement, Money In Politics, and Redistricting. Additionally the position is expected to build the aptitude of organizations to successfully develop and implement year-round campaigns and civic engagement strategies.

 

The Issue Coordinator is required to demonstrate leadership on issues that disproportionately impact the Rising American Electorate (people of color, young people under thirty years of age, and single women), including jobs and the economy, and access to equal and quality education and health care.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work to build and implement a long-term, unified strategy to reclaim our democracy for the WV 501c3 network, encouraging collaboration, and utilization of best practices.
  • Along with the Wisconsin Voices Executive Director and Communications Director, be a driving force in implementing a collaborative communications strategy around voting rights and enfranchisement
  • Coordinate the Voting Rights Table
  • Build the capacity of partner organizations to align their issues with protecting and expanding voting rights
  • Build the capacity of the Voting Rights Table to implement campaigns at the systemic, grassroots and grasstops levels
  • Work with, and lobby elected officials and leaders to develop policies that protect and expand our democracy
  • Provide workshops and trainings around protecting and expanding our democracy
  • Conduct research and develop ongoing expertise in enfranchisement and voting rights
  • Represent Wisconsin Voices on statewide and national enfranchisement work groups and coalitions
  • Raise and manage funds for enfranchisement projects and re-grants
  • Represent Wisconsin Voices at issue table meetings as needed
  • Develop and support the work of the African-American Civic Engagement Roundtable, and other RAE constituency tables
  • Work with Wisconsin Voices staff to implement coordinated 501c3 civic engagement and voter engagement strategies
  • Meet fundraising goals, develop funding proposals and build relationships with prospective donors to ensure continued success of programming
  • Write reports on the program for management / Board of Directors and funders
  • Communicate with funders as outlined in funding agreements as needed
  • Ensure that programs operates within the approved budget
  • Manage all project funds according to established accounting policies and procedures
  • Ensure financial reports and supporting documentation for funders are prepared as outlined in funding agreements
  • Identify and evaluate the risks associated with program activities and take appropriate action to control the risks
  • Monitor the program activities on a regular basis and conduct bi-annual evaluations according to the program evaluation framework. Report evaluation findings to the Executive Director and recommend changes to enhance the program, as appropriate

 

Qualifications

The ideal Coordinator will have a unique combination of skills and interests that include strong knowledge of voting rights, linking enfranchisement with issue campaigns to mobilize civic action across constituencies.

Qualifications include:

●      A demonstrated commitment to the shared values of Wisconsin Voices organizations and experience working on social justice issues

●      Experience working on issues of voting rights, and demonstrated proficiency on the following issues: Election Administration, Voter Modernization, Redistricting, Re-Enfranchisement, and Money in Politics

●      Experience linking voting rights to other social justice issues and civic engagement efforts

●      Experience coordinating coalitions and work groups

●      Experience and understanding of grassroots organizing

●      Experience and understanding of local and statewide policy development, and lobbying elected officials

●      Understanding and experience with message framing, development, and implementation

●      Experience gaining earned media; use of social media a plus

●      Excellent and proven written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills

●      Ability to communicate and build strong working relationships with a range of nonprofit organizations – from grassroots groups to state-level policy organizations

●      Able to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups of people

●      Willingness to travel throughout Wisconsin

●      Good personal organization, time management and planning skills, along with a demonstrated aptitude for taking the initiative on projects

●      Able to work well as a team member

●      Strong work ethic

●      Willingness to work evenings and weekends

●      Excellent attention to detail and accuracy

●      Fundraising experience preferred

●      Excellent project management skills

●      Experience in campaign, issue and/or organizational strategic planning

●      Able to work in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects and meeting deadlines
