Executive Director, Family Planning Health Services - Wausau

Location: Wausau, WI

Family Planning Health Services (FPHS), a private, non-profit, community based, and confidential reproductive health care provider in Central Wisconsin, seeks an entrepreneurial and mission-driven Executive Director to lead the organization with vision, passion, and commitment.

The Executive Director’s key responsibilities include organizational leadership, strategic plan vision and implementation, public policy advocacy, board relations, fund development, and business operations for all programs, network partnerships, and clinic locations. The Executive Director will serve as an internal and external spokesperson and leader for FPHS, ensuring an effective organization that delivers high quality services in a variety of client-centered environments. This is a full-time position located in Wausau, WI.

The Executive Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Public Affairs and Advocacy

  • Promotes use and recognition of the agency and its programs
  • Implements public relations objectives approved by the Board
  • Develops and maintains effective communication and coordination with elected officials, media, funders, social service agencies and businesses
  • Analyzes, develops, and implements strategies for public policy, both legislative and regulatory
  • Implements effective leadership in advocacy activities and interagency coordination consistent with the mission of the organization at local, state and national levels

Organizational Leadership

  • Supervises senior leadership team (WIC Director, Director of Finance, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services, Director of E-Health Project Development) and overall staff of 48
  • Oversees effective systems to recruit, hire, terminate, supervise and evaluate staff and volunteers
  • Implements strategies to encourage staff involvement in decisions and teamwork within the agency, fostering a supportive, transparent work environment
  • Administers personnel functions in conformity with laws and approved personnel policies
  • Supervises and leads managers of agency programs and finances

Operations, Finance, and Fund Development

  • Forecasts financial needs, develops and administers annual agency budget of approximately $4,000,000 as approved by the Board and within available funds
  • Assures adequate accounting and internal controls to meet funders' requirements and legal requirements of a 501(c)(3) agency
  • Provides timely and useful information for program management and Board reports
  • Develops grant and funding opportunities for agency programs
  • Develops and supports fundraising activities within the regulations of a 501(c)(3) agency
  • Develops new and expanded agency programs within the agency mission and with Board approval
  • Develops fundraising opportunities in conjunction with the Board

Governance and Administrative

  • Supports an effective private non-profit Board of Directors to develop mission, direction and policy for the agency and its programs.
  • Implements policies of the Board of Directors
  • Assures compliance with laws, regulations and funding source requirements applicable to a private non-profit 501(c)(3) agency
  • Develops goals for Board of Director's approval and reports on accomplishments; oversees implementation; develops and oversees corrective plans

Strong candidates will offer exceptional interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to serve as a compelling spokesperson for the organization and its mission in a range of public arenas, strong leadership and management skills, and a genuine passion for ensuring that women and families have access to high quality reproductive health care.

Other desired qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • At least five years of experience at the administrative level of a social services agency
  • Excellent people and team management skill set
  • A track record of commitment to the FPHS mission and vision
  • Demonstrated skill in strategic planning and implementation
  • A highly entrepreneurial spirit, including the ability to develop and implement plans to increase organizational scale and impact
  • Strong financial and operational skill set; the ability to oversee all aspects of a complex, multi-program, multi-site organization
  • Experience in one or more of the agency's programs

Compensation and Benefits:
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Incorporated in 1973, the agency was formed without stock and not-for-profit and operates under the policies of a volunteer Board of Directors. FPHS provides services to anyone and everyone regardless of age, income or marital status.

The agency grew from the time of incorporation in 1973 to the present and now provides reproductive health care services in seven Central Wisconsin counties: Adams, Juneau, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Portage and Taylor. FPHS established and maintains an outreach site at Keenan Health Center in Milwaukee to help meet the needs of the population in the west Milwaukee area. FPHS provides WIC services (Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children) in Langlade, Lincoln and Marathon counties. Other programs incorporated include Early Identification of Pregnancy (EIDP) and reproductive health exams for women covered by the Wisconsin Well-Woman Program (WWWP).
