Action Alert 2: Clean up Wisconsin government
Background: How at risk is our state for government corruption?  Wisconsin got a C minus on its corruption risk report card, developed by the State Integrity Investigation based on our laws and practices dealing with government transparency and accountability.  Our redistricting process, public access to information and state pension fund management, in particular, dragged down Wisconsin's grade.
Take Action: Click here to send a message to the governor and your state representatives, demanding that they tell you how they plan to make Wisconsin's government more transparent and accountable.  On a related issue, click here to sign an open letter to President Obama, urging him to get big money out of elections.

Action Alert 3: Support public safety, reduce recidivism - Milwaukee County
Background: The Milwaukee County Correctional Facility - South (CCF-S) has been run by the Sheriff since 2009.  The County Board recently voted to restore funding for a CCF-S superintendent, who would improve public safety by implementing programs to reduce recidivism, including AODA treatment, employment training, and community based alternatives like Electronic Monitoring, the Huber Facility and the Day Reporting Center.  However, County Executive Chris Abele has said he intends to veto budget amendments.
Take Action: Call Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele at 414-278-4211 or email him at countyexec@milwcnty.com, urging him not to veto the Harris Amendment, which restored funding for the CCF-S superintendent position.

Action Alert 4: Attend events on drone warfare, frac sand mining - Madison
Background: Two upcoming Madison events address priority issues for WNPJ:

  • On Sunday, November 11 at 8 p.m. at the Fountain, 122 State St, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence Brian Terrell will discuss drone warfare and his experiences meeting with drone victims in Afghanistan.  At the end of November, Brian will report to federal prison to serve a six-month sentence for taking part in nonviolent civil disobedience against murder by drones.
  • On Tuesday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m. in 1106 Mechanical Engineering Building, 1513 University Ave, there will be a panel discussion on the impact of frac sand mining in Wisconsin, organized by the UW Nelson Institute.  Panelists include the president of the new mining industry group, Wisconsin Industrial Sand Association.  Attend and ask difficult questions!

Take Action: Attend one or both events, and contact WNPJ to join coalition efforts against drone warfare and frac sand mining.
