Action Alert 1: Say no to frac sand mining
Background: The recent explosion of sand mining in Wisconsin for hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") to extract deep natural gas deposits elsewhere threatens our water and air, not to mention the wooded hills, bluffs and rich farmland of central and western Wisconsin.  There are 87 permitted frac sand mines in the state currently, each a whopping 500 to 1000 acres large, with 20 more already proposed.  The strong, rounded grains of sand that lent their name to environmentalist Aldo Leopold's beloved Sand County are so in demand by the natural gas industry that 50 train cars full of sand leave Wisconsin every day.
Take Action: Sign an online petition to all our state Senators, against a proposed 160-acre frac sand mine in the town of Union, Waupaca County.

Action Alert 3: Last call to sponsor WNPJ's awards reception
Background: Every year, following our member assembly, WNPJ celebrates the amazing grassroots peace and justice activism taking place across Wisconsin.  Don't miss this year's awards reception on October 27, where we will honor Rev. Joe and Joyce Ellwanger with our Lifetime Achievement Award, for their work stretching from civil rights organizing in the 1950s and 1960s to their work today supporting labor rights and challenging Wisconsin's over-incarceration and involvement in drone warfare.  The reception, which includes refreshments and live music, will also honor our Peacemakers of the Year and the inaugural winner of the Dennis Bergren LGBT Advocacy Award.
Take Action: Support WNPJ and honor our awardees by sponsoring the awards reception with a tax-deductible donation at whatever level.  Click here to donate securely online, or mail a check made out to WNPJ to WNPJ, 122 State St #405A, Madison, WI 53703.  All sponsors who donate by this Friday, Sept 21, will be listed on the event invitation.
