2009/06/28: In-state tuition for children of immigrants in state budget

Although Wisconsin immigrant-rights advocates were disappointed that a drivers card for undocumented workers was not included in the budget, some were encouraged to find that State lawmakers had kept a provision to allow the children of undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates at the University of Wisconsin if they have resided in the state for three years.
"This victory is something that brings more than hope, it brings opportunity,  an opportunity for a better future not only for the student but for the entire family, for entire communities as higher education is finally possible for their youth," said Jannet Arenas, a Wisconsin immigrant-rights activist.
The Governor has signed the budget, including that provision, into law.
