Baldwin stands firm against war funding
Representative Tammy Baldwin continued her consistent record of voting against war funding, providing one of only 31 Democratic votes in the House of Representatives against another $97 billion for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Baldwin was the only Wisconsin Democrat to vote against the funding, although Appleton's Steve Kagen had voted against war funding on an earlier vote. Republicans Petri, Ryan and Sensebrenner also voted against the bill because it included $5 billion for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to aid nations affected by the global financial crisis.
Peace activist David Swanson called Baldwin and 31 other members of Congress "heroes", saying,
"These 32 Congress members, in many cases, stood up to threats, promises, and abuse from the White House and Nancy Pelosi. President Obama and several cabinet secretaries, the National Security Advisor, and of course the White House Chief of staff lobbied hard, including threatening to cut off all future electoral support. These members resisted and placed the interests of their constitutents and of the people of America, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq, above the interests of the Democratic Party. They are heroes. They are the place to start building a caucus that might achieve peace"
