Spotlight on a WNPJ Member Group - WISDOM

WISDOM is a grassroots organization comprised mostly of religious congregations of several different denominations, which works to have a common, collective voice on issues of social justice. In total, WISDOM includes participation from individuals of around 160 WI congregations stemming from 19 distinct religious backgrounds. (photo Talik Akbar - from the WISDOM website)

WISDOM also includes EXPO (Ex-incarcerated People Organizing) and the Menikanaehkem community of the Menominee Nations. EXPO offers support and specialized leadership training and engages those impacted by incarceration in reforming Wisconsin’s criminal justice system. Led by previously imprisoned men and women, EXPO emerged in 2014 when previously incarcerated people around Wisconsin began to gather to discuss what it would like to have a statewide organization. Members work to provide support and organize to change Wisconsin’s penal system. Through members in EXPO, there is a campaign to put an end to mass incarceration in Wisconsin. Given the disproportionate rate of especially low-income people and people of color, Wisconsin’s incarceration rate is the highest in the upper Midwest. Especially among African-American males, Wisconsin’s rate of incarceration is the highest in the nation, which is more than twice the national average.

Besides the ROC Wisconsin (Restoring Our Communities) Campaign and other efforts to end mass incarceration in Wisconsin, WISDOM and its local organizations promote Immigrant Rights, Public Transportation, Economic Justice, Health Care availability, and more. WISDOM advocates to make sure that communities are welcoming for immigrant brothers and sisters, and that they are treated with dignity and respect. In terms of transit, WISDOM leaders work towards an effective plan that would repair ocal roads and provides transit rather than massive highways. Especially when many people are unable to have a driver’s license or have a car, transit becomes a necessity.

UPCOMING EVENT:  One particular event of interest in the near future is WISDOM’s Madison Action Day, an event that happens every two years. This year, it will be on Thursday, April 15th. Adapting due to COVID-19, the Madison Action Day will have a big, inspirational program in the morning on Zoom that will highlight the amazing work going on around the state, talk about the values that motivate WISDOM, and learn a little more about the issues. Later, there will be a visit with State Senators and State Assembly Representatives on Zoom, with each of their local organizations making appointments with the legislators that represent their area.

There will be a booklet printed again this year, filled with information about WISDOM and its affiliates, and filled with information about the issues we care about, and WISDOM is working to deliver it to every person who registers to participate in Madison Action Day.

The cost is free. To register, check out this link:  Madison Action Day Registration Link
