We Need Your Help for a Just WI Budget

2/2 We appreciate all your time and effort in developing and growing our Coalition for a Just Wisconsin Budget. It is heartwarming that everyday more endorsers sign on. Please continue to reach out to all of your people. Let them know that you’d like to see them join you in signing on to our “Call for a Just WI Budget.”  They can click here to sign on. But even with this growing support, we know that it will be an uphill climb to get our priorities into the state’s biennial budget. It is increasingly clear that the Governor will need to use the full extent of his veto power if we are to secure any degree of justice into our state budget. As a coalition, we are urging the Governor to embrace this strategy by bringing it to him in two ways:

In letters from all of us and our networks. Below is the next letter that our coalition plans to send to the Governor, and we encourage all of our members and friends, groups and individuals, to send him a similar letter. Please join us in that effort.

We will use any and all connections that we have to people who either have the Governor’s ear, or who know someone who does. We need your help: If you can think of anyone who may be such a person, please let us know. Let us also know if you are comfortable being the person to reach out to them or if you would like us to.

Also, please join us for a press conference/public hearing to help us bring attention to our growing movement for justice. Thursday, Feb 4th at 1:30 PM. This will be live-streamed to Building Unity’s Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/buildingunitywi

Sample Letter that we encourage ALL groups & individuals to customize & send to Governor Evers:

The Honorable Tony Evers, Governor of Wisconsin

Dear Governor Evers,

On Jan 27th, the Coalition for a Just Wisconsin Budget sent you a letter with our “Call for a Just Wisconsin Budget.” Our group is part of this coalition which prioritizes racial equity, economic justice, health, environmental protection, criminal justice reform, public education, democracy, and fair taxation.

Wisconsin is in a state of emergency and cannot afford a status quo budget. Not only do we remain in the clutches of the pandemic, our state also is experiencing glaring and growing economic instability and inequality, continuing social unrest due to chronic and systemic racism, inability of local governments to meet the mandates and needs before them, and of course a climate crisis that, if left unchecked, will do severe harm to both our environment and our economy. These emergencies require prompt and bold action.

We will do everything that we can to mobilize the grassroots and to influence state legislators. But we are painfully aware that many legislators do not understand the dire emergencies we face. Too many have shown little to no interest in working with you and have blocked your efforts at every turn.

We are certain that merely pleading for cooperation and conciliation will not work. Wisconsin needs you to employ a budget strategy that forces legislators to negotiate in good faith. We suggest that you creatively use the full powers of your office to secure a final budget that includes our life-saving priorities. Plausibly threatening certain programs through strategic use of your veto authority is the only way that we can see to achieve such negotiations.

We don't envy your task of navigating the partisan divisions that plague our state. But we all know that Wisconsin needs you to succeed!

Sincerely,
