Event Dates:

Dane Sanctuary Coalition Big Read

The Death and Life of Aida Hernandez by Aaron Bobrow-Strain

If you want to understand, listen to the stories…  We are so excited to be reading this book and learning the story of Aida Hernandez and U.S. immigration policy.  Not only will it help us understand the situation at the border and the plight of many immigrants, but we hope it will also spark a conversation among us that will encourage us to advocate and act for change.

Books are available through the public library, and A Room of One’s Own will have copies as well at a 10% discount.  You can also contact Cassidy Miller at MacMillan to inquire about placing a bulk order at a discount -  cassidy.miller@macmillan.com. Please use the attached flyer to help publicize this program throughout your congregation and community.

You might want to obtain a few for a small group in your congregation or organization, perhaps your Sanctuary Committee.  Once this small group has read the book and had some time for discussion and reflection, we encourage you to make it available to more people in your congregation.  Perhaps your congregation can subsidize part of the cost for your members.  In order to reach a larger number of people we suggest some options; you can decide what will work best in your congregation/organization.

*  Small groups that meet each week or every other week to discuss specific chapters.
*  A drop-in group that is available every week or two to discuss and reflect.
*  Reading the book in an established group e.g. book club, men’s group, youth group…
*  Education hour presentation where participants can reflect on their reading.

A study guide is available from the WI Faith Voices for Justice website:

We hope reading this book will provide for a lively and thoughtful discussion of immigration policies in our country.  And we look forward to hearing the author, Aaron Bobrow-Strain on May 14, 7-9 p.m. at the Madison Central Library, 201 W. Mifflin St., Madison Room.  More information will be coming as we get closer to that date.

Meanwhile, let’s read and learn!
