Industrial Ag in the Driftless: How do we protect our communities?

Saturday, January 20th
1-5:30pm
AmericInn Conference Center
1700 Elm Street, Boscobel, WI  53805

Grassroots organizations from throughout the region bring you a forum on the rapid increase of industrial animal confinements and associated infrastructure in the Driftless area and what communities are doing in response.

We will learn about our sensitive karst hydrogeology and what has happened in areas where many of these operations have been permitted to see how industrial agriculture can affect our health, economies, and environment.   We will also learn about supporting other ways to produce pork and food on this landscape.

Our keynote speech, “Defending Rural Communities against Economic Colonization” will be given by John Ikerd, Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri. He grew up on a small farm and later worked in private industry for a time and spent thirty years in various professorial positions at four different state universities. Since retiring, he spends most of his time writing and speaking on issues related to sustainability with an emphasis on agriculture and economics. He is the author of six published books and one free on-line book, which can be located through his websites: http://faculty.missouri.edu/ikerdj/  or http://johnikerd.com

We have gathered a diverse and knowledgeable panel, ranging from a local hog farmer, a neighbor to an industrial hog facility, a geologist, an environmental attorney, state and national level environmental advocates, and more who, will discuss issues and answer questions.
There will be plenty of time to network and share our struggles and successes, with a focus on solution-oriented discussion about what has been done and what can be done to protect our land, water, and air in the Driftless region.
