2008/12/08: Two California cities approve ban on recruiting minors

Voters in the Northern-California cities of Eureka and Arcata approved ballot measures prohibiting military recruiters from initiating contact with any person under the age of 18 within city limits. The measure won a 73% "yes" vote in Arcata and a 56% "yes" vote in Eureka. More than 4000 residents signed petitions to place the initiatives on the ballot. The measures will have the effect of prohibiting any military recruitment within Arcata and Eureka high schools. Organizers noted that the Army's School Recruiting Program Handbook advises recruiters: "If you wait until they're seniors, it's probably too late."
